Often people come into therapy because they are in crisis, or because an old pattern has become too painful to bear. With effective therapy, the decision to start almost always results in a constructive opportunity to change, often in ways they didn’t dare to hope. Anxious people become more confident and begin to assert themselves, depressed people find meaning and a new sense of power, hope, and opportunity, the people who repeatedly destroy important relationships learn ways to sustain and deepen them, the people who have suffered life-long patterns of failure start finding ways to succeed.
There can be no guarantee, of course, and ultimately your success is up to you. It can be remarkably difficult to pick up the phone and take the first step toward feeling better. But once you do, you will find that you don’t have to tackle this important work alone.
I have extensive advanced training in every major psychotherapy approach; we will use a therapy approach to fit you. Regardless of techniques, however, I always focus on the creation of a warm context in which we can identify problems and find practical ways to solve them. Throughout our down-to-earth conversations I will listen with one ear for the deep and underlying psychological components of your experience and perspective, wondering who is the underlying you, how you can be more happy and alive, and how you can make the most of this one life you have been given.
People intrinsically (but often unconsciously) want to thrive. This most commonly happens when they have caring, respectful relationships in which their strengths are recognized and encouraged. A large body of research demonstrates that therapy helps most people. If an exploration of my website gives you the feeling I might be a good fit for you, I encourage you to give me a call so we can talk. If you decide to come in for a first meeting, we will think together about how therapy can help you create the life you want.
